Flip's Legal Index

A state-by-state guide to the laws and court cases that govern renting.

Welcome to Flip! The Legal Index is where we get into the nitty-gritty details of rental law. All of our articles cite the actual statutes and court cases that inform the rules in your state—so if you’re feeling lawyerly, you can check our work. And, unlike our guide for renters, the Legal Index wasn’t written with a specific audience in mind. These articles are intended for landlords and tenants alike.

How to navigate the index

When it comes to rental law, a lot depends on where you live. We built our guide to reflect that. Every topic has a general page that walks you through the concept and an overview of laws in various states (plus any federal laws that might apply). Then, you can choose your state from the dropdown menu at the top of the page to read more about the specific laws where you live.

Getting started

There’s a lot of ground to cover when it comes to landlord-tenant law. Not sure where to start? Below are a few of our most popular articles to get you going—or browse the categories in the left-hand menu.
